Incorrect physician coding can mean lower reimbursement payments, or a slower turnaround time for the provider to receive those payments. ICD-10

By Jody Bryan

There are many different and important aspects of the health care industry and one of those is medical coding. The current set of codes that is used for medical coding is that of ICD 9-CM set of codes. This is used as the method to code and report for diagnoses, procedures and services provided for patients as recorded in the patient charts and information. The United States Department of Health and human Services has recently put into place a new set of codes that will be used instead of the current set. The new set of codes, called the ICD-10 codes, has many different changes and developments in comparison to the ICD 9 set of codes.

Many medical coders and billers who will be utilizing this new method are going to have to put a large amount of effort into learning the new system and the changes that it entails. Many professionals believe that the time to start learning the new system and beginning to implement training is now. The sooner medical coders are educated and trained on the new set of codes, the easier that the transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10 will be.

Even now there are already some health care organizations and practices that have begun to utilize the new system, or have already begun training for the change. Many organizations believe that they are already fully prepared and equipped to start working off of the new set of codes. It is very important to be prepared early for the transition as the changes will affect many different parts of the medical practice, not just the coding department.

The new system of coding will affect all of the departments within a health care provider, from the nurses to the front desk, it is going to be important for all employees to be trained and recognize the changes that will happen. The number of codes being used will increase from the current set of 17,000 codes to a more specific and detailed 140,000 codes. This requires training for every member of the office, not just the billing and medical coding department because much of it relies on the whole patient process, not just the outcome.

One of the biggest changes is the number of codes that will be used for patient charts. The number of codes is going to increase from 17,000 codes currently in use to over 140,000 more specific and detailed codes. This means a lot more ICD-10 training and memorization of codes and their specific uses.

Why Outsource Coding?

By Quinn Martin

It has been made clear that our current health care system is in desperate need for improvement and help. While there are so many different aspects of the health care system that can be changed and developed, it is important to focus on each little part that can be improved. One part that plays an important role in the overall system is that of medical and physician Coding.

Coding is something that has to be done for every single patient that is treated or cared for. Medical or physicians coding is the process of coding the charts of patients to reflect the services or care they have received as well as any type of diagnosis and patient interaction. These codes are then used by health care providers as well as the health insurance companies as a way to calculate payments, reimbursements and other important details of the health care process.

Outsourced coding has become a more widespread option for those companies wanting to improve on the current status of their medical coding. Outsourced medical coding to cover the needs of a health care provider allows the business to focus more effort towards the patient, and leave the coding to professionals who have to deal with only that aspect of the process. This helps to make sure all of the medical coding is done correctly, and completely.

There are many different benefits to choosing outsourced coding for the needs of a healthcare institution or provider. The companies and organizations that provide outsourced coding programs are focused on constantly improving their medical coding efforts as well as updating and developing the current coding practices. In many cases this is not as easy for an in-house medical coding department to do because they often have other responsibilities on top of coding patient charts; such as communicating with the insurance agencies and other organizations.

Outsourced coding can also help health care providers by totally taking over all of the necessary medical coding needs, or by simply taking over excess or back logged medical coding. Many health care providers become bogged down with back logged charts that still need to be coded; this is where outsourced coding can be a good option. It can help the coding department within a business to get back on top of the necessary charts, or to take over all of the operations within the medical coding department.
