Critical Care Nursing - A Meaningful Way of Life

By Chris Scarborough

Academic education is not enough for critical care nurses to carry on in their profession. A talent for quickly analyzing, anticipating problems and constantly reassessing situations, is crucial, as well as a desire to always be the best. If the nurse does not possess all of these abilities along with her nursing skill and experience then a patient may die.

What does it take to be proficient in nursing?

Not only must nurses value and appreciate the doctors they work with, but they must also have a good relationship with their patients Critical care nurses have heavy responsibilities and the physicians rely on their abilities to analyze any situation using their critical thinking processes plus documenting and reporting every detail, evaluating the patient's situation and continually reevaluating their patient all the while showing understanding and concern for the patient and their family or friends.

Ongoing Education:

Ample training is a must in this line of work and a nurse's training process is inexhaustible. It is not only doctors that must be familiar with all aspects of and all the latest changes in the field they specialized in, but nurses, too. It is not only patients that rely on a nurse's skills and expertise, but also doctors and other members of the personnel. Medical facilities and staff would be lost without nurses, since it's always the nurses holding the fort.

Love for the job:

Success in nursing requires dedication to medicine and its object of study - the human body, as well as to the patients and their well-being. Of course the study of anatomy is part of the nurse's education and if this is not a really fascinating study for the nurse perhaps nursing is the wrong vocation for them. Passion for the people, for the job and the human body is what makes a nurse a very good professional.

Extra-qualities a nurse can't do without

It is a known fact that nursing is one of the most significant and challenging careers one can wish for. Nurses need to be really confident in themselves and their abilities, to be efficient in critically thinking each and every situation they are faced with.

Nurses in general, but critical care nurses more particularly, are faced with life and death situations on a daily basis. Because of this, they will either gain strength of character and self-confidence along with a clear perspective on the value of life, or they will simply break down. Nurses can be a soothing and encouraging influence on patients and their families and friends, as well as on their co-workers, if they possess a positive outlook on life. For nurses to be proud of themselves and their work, they need to have confidence in their abilities and knowledge.

Here's to all nurses and the amazing jobs they perform every day.
