Medical billing codes are important to all people in the medical community. A Medical coder reads a patients records and inputs the correct codes into the files and on the forms for the insurance company.  If more information is necessary a coding technician can consult with nurses and doctors.  Codes reduce the margin of error, they are quick, and they are easier to read than handwritten notes.  Technicians can work onsite in a medical office with a starting salary of $25,000-$30,000 annually.  Others choose to work for themselves as contract employees running their business from their home.  The income opportunity is much more lucrative at home with coders making between $20,000-$100,000 per year.

Many colleges offer formal training courses to be a medical coder.  There are also several online course opportunities availabe as well.
