Genital Herpes Treatment Advancements

By Heather Michaels

There are genital herpes treatment advancements you may not be aware of.

What is Genital Herpes

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease that affects 20% of the sexually active population. About 80% of those with genital herpes remain undiagnosed. Virus cultures must be confirmed to determine diagnosis. Risk factors are: number of partners, female gender, African American or Mexican American ethnicity, being older. The more risk factors you have, the more at risk you are.

Genital herpes infects the body through the skin or mucous membranes, establishes itself in the spinal cord and is transmitted to the genital area where it develops lesions. Outbreaks of lesions occur periodically. Incubation period is 2-14 days. Symptoms that may be experienced include: headache, fever, fatigue, pain, itching and discharge. Outbreak episodes range from approximately 10 to 18 days. Complications can include: aseptic meningitis, urinary retention, constipation and HIV.

Those with HSV-1 can experience 1.3 episodes the first year and .07 in the second year. 43% of people have no subsequent episodes in the first year and 67% none in the second year. Of those with HSV-2, 4.1 experience recurrences in the first year.

20% of people infected have no symptoms.

Herpes can be transmitted during outbreaks.

History of Genital Herpes Treatment

When patients become aware of their condition, they can seek treatment and protect their partners. Genital herpes treatment recommended by experts focuses on management of the disease, not cure of the disease. Treatment is given to reduce outbreaks and transmission; in addition preventative measures such as the use of condoms can decrease the chances of transmitting the disease to a partner, but there has been no measure available to decrease the risk for neonatal herpes.

Treatment can shorten episodes of outbreaks and lessen pain and danger of transmission. Further treatment goals are to improve patient's sense of well-being and decrease neonatal herpes.

In 1920 a vaccine available became available for treating HSV. It was effective for some women and although it could not prevent acquiring the disease, it did treat the symptoms. This was the GlaxoSmithKline Herpes Vaccine.

Newer antivirals with pharmacokinetic attributes have been researched and approved for treatment of recurring episodes of herpes and for therapy to suppress the virus.

Genital Herpes Treatment Advancements: Finding the Right Solution

There are now treatments which use natural substances such as those found in human breast milk as well as saw palmetto to accomplish what many used to rely on antibiotics to accomplish. These natural solutions are used to enhance the functioning of the immune system and to promote the self-healing powers of your body.

The most effective natural solutions are found in pearlized 100% pure form, such as mini pellets. These solutions are being used more and more by preventive medicine advocates for the sake of lowering drug dependencies and for fighting disease.

When used for controlling genital herpes, such solutions have not to have caused side effects, and they can help control outbreaks. Patients who use these solutions increase their dosage when they feel an outbreak coming on, to prevent it from taking place. Many users report that, compared to other medications they have used, natural supplements have been more successful and of course safer...not to mention cheaper.

Drugs generally given for treatment and control of herpes can be quite expensive, running to hundreds of dollars for a one month supply. The problem with these drugs is that they don't help your immune system as natural solutions do. As you probably know, boosting your immune system is the way to make your body strong for fighting infection. If the idea of controlling herpes outbreaks with natural substances instead of drugs sounds appealing, a natural supplement is certainly worth looking into.

Another thing to remember is that your health and your diet affect the frequency, duration and severity of your outbreaks. So it stands to reason that making your body and your immune system stronger will help you control your disease.

Natural supplements are used to control genital herpes, but that's not all there is to it. Many people who use them claim that these dietary supplements can be used by the entire family to help them attain and keep optimal health. Such a solution is most effective when taken daily and to see results most of them have to be taken for 3-6 months. When searching for the right solution, make sure it's FDA approved and non-toxic.
