Sciatic Nerve Pain Prevention

By Amy Satterwhite

There are many different causes of severe sciatic nerve pain. A slipped disc, pinched nerve, seriously sprained or torn muscle, even muscle spasms can cause pain so bad that all a person wants to do is take a handful of pain medication and curl up in bed. Even though severe sciatica pain can be devastating there is good news. Once what's causing the pain is identified, a treatment plan can then be put into effect.

Sciatica pain is a condition caused by the stretching of the sciatic nerves. The meaning here is that the ligament or cushion that provides the connection between the spine and the legs begins to rapture. When this happens, the discs that connect these two areas push on the outside along the areas where they probably aren't supposed to be. These areas may include places occupied by the nerves whereas causing nerve dislocations. Once this happens, the triggering of the pain is caused by the compression of the nerves forcing them to be where they aren't supposed to be. This is more profound when to people who tend to feel the pain that would also be characterized by the weakness as well as the cause of the numbness along leg or the legs.

While there are several possible causes of sciatica pain, by far the most common source of sciatic nerve irritation is a bulging or herniated disc in the lower lumbar spine. A damaged disc may bulge into the opening where one of the nerve roots exits the spine on it's way to join other nerve roots as part of the sciatic nerve. The bulging disc may create direct nerve pressure, and/or may trigger inflammation and swelling, which can also cause pressure on the nerve. When this occurs, pain and other symptoms may be felt part along the course of the sciatic nerve, starting in the buttock area and possibly running down the leg, sometimes all the way to the foot.

Obviously, not all lower back pain will be caused by a kidney infection but it should definitely be kept in mind, especially if a person doesn't recall injuring their back in any way, shape, or form recently. Kidney infections are often accompanied by a fever. Most often, the fever can spike rather high. A compression on the sciatic nerve causes this problem leaving the patient with immense pain in the legs, lower legs, thighs and lower back. However, this problem can also be treated in natural ways. Though it takes time to deal with this problem, proper care and precautions can show great results. But people who suffer from sciatica have several doubts regarding the cause and treatments of the disease. As the treatment prescribed by one doctor differs from another, they are often left confused. In many cases, sciatica has a long term effect on the patient's health.

Not every buttock or leg pain that people think is sciatica is actually sciatica. True sciatic nerve pain (sciatic nerve irritation) is usually felt mostly in the back of the leg (not the front or side of the leg). Symptoms of true sciatica are described by various people as stabbing, burning, tingling, numbness/heaviness, or like an electric shock. But even if symptoms seem like sciatica, they are not always due to actual irritation of the sciatic nerve.

The most common cause of sciatic nerve pain is the irritation of the nerve. When this condition occurs then surgical treatment won't be needed in order to solve the problem but you can ask yourself some questions if there are other symptoms that come along with this pain. The inability to control the bowel or bladder along with weakness felt in the leg might be signs of alarm.

The best known way is by undergoing various known exercises for sciatic nerve pain that can be coordinated by the help of a yoga or gym or aerobics instructor. Although the instructor may have what it takes to take care of the condition, there are probable facts that he or she may actually need to pay a personal visit to a qualified physiotherapy to help relieve the patient off the heavy burden. This is because working around the said exercises for sciatica may not be the only way through since this is actually a condition that can be questionable at anytime within any given moment. Some of the causes that we have seen are more spearheaded by overuse. We tend to work our bodies around the clock especially during these tough economic times. When we find ourselves being faced by this factor, there are various needs that we may actually need to look at.

When you combine exercise and yoga stretches for sciatic nerve pain together, you get two excellent tools in your arsenal of healing. Exercise is great for building up strength and endurance. Yoga is perfect for maintaining elasticity and flexibility; two great attributes every muscle should have.More times than not, the cause and symptoms of sciatica can be treated conservatively with a combination of physical therapy-based treatments. Manual therapy techniques, such as joint mobilization or manipulation, are commonly combined with soft tissue treatments such as Active Release Techniques.

Most episodes of sciatic nerve pain will resolve within a period of several weeks with or without treatment, but due to the severity of the pain typically involved, most people with sciatica will seek out treatment. Unfortunately, due to misconceptions by doctors and patients alike regarding the nature of sciatica, the necessary steps to prevent a return of sciatica are usually not taken. So, even though most people do recover from a bout of sciatica, nearly all will eventually have problems again at some point. Even sciatica sufferers initially treated successfully with surgery will often have future problems with sciatica.

The good news is that with awareness of how to manage sciatica pain and a little bit of effort dedicated to prevention, most people can avoid ongoing long-term sciatica problems.
